Students, undergraduate and postgraduate, may experience thoughts and feelings that are distressing or affect their ability to concentrate on their studies: anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, bereavement, issues of sexuality, relationship difficulties, family conflict, homesickness, problems arising from studies.
Admitting to problems can be tough, and resolving them can be demanding. It may help to talk with a friendly, unbiased person. Counselling involves sitting in a small, comfortable room, talking privately to a counsellor who will listen attentively, understand at depth and not believe that you are foolish or bad. This process often brings fresh insight and sometimes releases emotions.
The Counselling Service is staffed by highly experienced, professionally qualifiesd counsellors who give free, confidential help.
Opening hours: 09:00 - 17:00 Monday to Friday throughout the year.

Financial problems getting you down?

Not sure if you are receiving everything to which you are entitled?

The fund can be used for course related costs such as childcare, books/equipment, travel, general living costs (such as rent). Learning Development Services relocated to Unit 4B/C Technology Park (Chester Road) in March 2005, with study support tutors now being based in the Study Support Centre on the 3rd Floor of Murray Library.
It is worth noting that this service provides one-to-one help with referencing and academic writing skills. So if you are still bamboozled by Harvard (or any other referencing style) book a session with a tutor NOW!
The maths tutor operates on a 'drop-in' basis and can give help with any aspect of maths, from basic mathematical concepts to higher level problems. It doesn't matter which programme the student is studying.
The study skills tutor is available on an appointment basis and provides help with general study skills including grammar, essay and report writing, revision techniques, bibliographical referencing and presentation skills.
During the summer scheduled sessions are suspended, but if you need support with a particular study problem please contact the Students' Union Academic Affairs Department and we will endeavour to find the help you need.

The Mental Health Adviser at the University of Sunderland provides support and advice to students on issues related to mental health and mental illness. The support aims to offer assistance to students who face barriers to their academic progression as a result of a mental health difficulty.
All the Tutors are resident. Their primary role is pastoral care - someone to talk to! They are available for non-academic advice and assistance, mediation in case of disputes and as a channel of communication with the University. They also monitor compliance with University guidelines on behaviour and health and safety.
The Domestic Service Manager and her staff are responsible for building maintenance; heating and cleaning, not the Tutors. The Senior Resident Tutor (SRT) and the staff of the Residential Services deal with disciplinary issues.
Alternatively, if you are experiencing problems and need assistance you can arrange for a Tutor to call around to your flat between the hours of 18.00 and 23.00 to discuss the matter.
A duty tutor is on call each evening from 18.00 to 08.00 the next day and 24 hours at weekends and bank holidays. A list of who is on duty is posted in the Security Reception. Duty tutors can be contacted via the security staff in the reception or University Control Room (Tel: 2028).
